I am Satusirkku Minor, and I am the main instructor and main choreographer for Academy Afrah. I taught Belly Dancing in Thunder Bay from March 2003 to July 2009, while I studied the oriental dance and drumming by taking classes and workshops in Egypt, USA, Finland, and various cities in Canada. In Years 2009-10 I spent six weeks in Turkey, and nine months in Egypt.

While in Egypt, I successfully completed a two-year residential program for advanced dancer and teacher training under the supervision of the legendary Dr. Hassan Khalil at ISOC in Cairo. In April, 2010, I was awarded the "Certificate of Specialty Teacher for Middle Eastern / Oriental Dance and Folklore" issued by Dr. Khalil.
Dr. Khalil is the founder of the famous Kaomeya Troupe of Egypt, director of musical theater at the Balloon Theatre and the Oum Kalthoum Theatre, Cairo , trainer and/or choreographer of many stars of Egyptian cinema: Samia Gamal, Taheya Carioca, Naima Akef, Nagua Fouad and many modern stars: Asmahan, Khaled Mahmoud, etc. , and performer, choreographer and dance director of many classic Egyptian films.

In addition, I successfully completed 4 part "Journey through Egypt Intensive Study/on-site tour Certificate" program with internationally known Sahra Saeeda, an American dancer who danced, researched and studied in Egypt 1989-1995. "Sahra Show" has been performed in Cairo alone over 1600 times!

I furthered my studies by taking classes with Mohamed El Hosseny, an amazing Egyptian male dancer, who has taught me Egyptian Folklore as well as Oriental technique during past four years, and whose workshop I organized for our first annual tour group of Egypt.

Mahmoud Reda style Egyptian Folklore I have studied with Mahmoud Reda, Farida Fahmy, Nesrin and Neven Ramez (All Egyptian). for 72 hrs in total.

I owe gratitude to Yasmina Ramzy (Canadian) of Toronto, whose classes and workshops I have attended and hosted (3 times in Thunder Bay).

My first Teacher Training and Professional Training I received in Montreal from Hadia (Canadian), Nova Scotia based Master Instructor and Dance Artist.

Middle-Eastern Drum instruction

I have received from Khaled (Cairo, Egypt), Suleiman Warwar (Nazareth, Palestine), Monsoor Monsoor (a.k.a.Victor) (Iraq), Jordan (Thunder Bay), Sheldon Valeda (Kitchener, ON), and Meghan (Thunder Bay).

Belly Dance experience is greatly enhanced by live drumming. I am pleased to have Percussion major Graduate Jordan from Lakehead University with us to share his talent and expertise. Many thanks to Rob, Stephanie, Mary, Cydney, and Kevin, who are currently enlivening our performances with their drumming skills. I also owe gratitude to all the drummers who have volunteered their time and efforts throughout the years. Amr (Egypt) and Victor (Iraq) were engineering students who composed the lively "From Eufrates to the Nile" drum solo for us, and gave us an authentic sample of middle-eastern drumming. Dave and Mike blew us away with their enthusiasm and talent! Sean Jesseau from Music Workshop (622-1841) is a great local drummer/instructor and has assisted us in our shows and workshops. John, Lorna, Carissa, Elizabeth,  and Lena, a great big thank you to you all, and I am so excited about the new drummers starting with us, Graham, Andy and Dave.

Belly Dance Classes are offered for practise on Sundays 3-4 PM and Wednesdays 8:40-9:40 PM.

Thursday night 7:30-8:30 PM (Beginners) and 8:30-9:30 PM (Intermediate) is for Middle-Eastern Community Drumming. See Class Schedule page
